Friday Foods – Caramel Apple Chai

Pay homage to this Halloween favorite around the campsite tomorrow night with this recipe from Fork in the Trail. The spiciness of chai tea works well with the apples and sweet caramels.

Caramel Apple Chai

Makes 2 servings

1/2 cup nonfat powdered milk

2 tablespoons loose chai tea

4 dried apple slices, chopped

3 bite-size, individually wrapped caramels

Sweetener, such as sugar or honey, to taste

At Home

Put the powdered milk in a zip-top freezer bag. Measure the loose chai tea and dried apple slices into a cheesecloth bag or tea filter, and then place them in a zip-top freezer bag with 3 caramels. Put this bag inside the bag with the powdered milk.

At Camp

Unwrap the caramels and put them in a pot with 2 1/2 cups water, the tea bag, and the powdered milk. Bring to a simmer over medium-low heat, stirring often so that the milk does not stick. Simmer for 3 to 5 minutes or until the tea is the strength you desire and the caramels have melted. Remove the cheesecloth bag and divide the tea between 2 camp cups. Sweeten to taste.

Happy Fall!
