Friday Foods – French Toast

Just because you don’t have a kitchen doesn’t mean that you can’t whip up a five-star breakfast. This French Toast recipe from Fork in the Trail  is simple to make and will be sure to get everyone’s day started on the right foot!

French Toast

Makes two servings

4 slices bread

2 servings powdered scrambled egg mix

11⁄2 teaspoons vanilla sugar

2 tablespoons nonfat powdered milk

Vegetable oil

Maple syrup or freeze-dried berries 3⁄4 cup water

At Home

Put the bread in a large ziplock freezer bag and compress the slices until they are somewhat flattened. Pour the eggs, vanilla sugar, and powdered milk in a smaller ziplock freezer bag. Put some of your favorite syrup in a small leakproof bottle, or put freeze-dried berries into a small plastic bag. Seal the smaller bag and syrup bottle (or bag of berries) inside the larger bag. Add a little vegetable oil to what you will take on your trip.

At Camp

Remove the bag with the egg and milk mixture from the large ziplock freezer bag and dump it in a pot. Add 3⁄4 cup of water and combine well. Put a little vegetable oil in your frying pan and preheat it over medium heat. Dip a piece of bread into the egg mixture and fry it, flipping once, until golden. Repeat with the remaining slices. Serve with a drizzle of your favorite syrup or rehydrated freeze-dried berries.
