A mystery in the High Sierra
In October 2005, two mountaineers climbing above Mendel Glacier in the High Sierra discovered the mummified remains of a uniformed WWII U.S. Airman frozen in the ice. Who was this man? How long had he been there? Where was his airplane?
The “Frozen Airman” discovery created a media frenzy and the mystery drew author Peter Stekel to investigate. In Final Flight: The Mystery of a WWII Plane Crash and the Frozen Airmen in the High Sierra, Stekel uncovers the story of the four-man crew, answering finally, what happened to the training flight that disappeared in 1942. While doing so, he discovers the unthinkable: Stekel himself finds the body of a second Airman in the glacier. Another young man would finally be coming home.
Stekel writes about his new book and what it was like to uncover this amazing mystery in a recent Amazon Kindle blog post. Read it HERE.
